Adding Texture to an Image

In this process we will learn how to add textures to an image to create drama or mood and doing it properly.

  • Open your image in Photoshop
  • Open the texture image.
  • Copy and Paste the texture in your image.
  • Go to Blending Modes, choose between Soft Light, Hard Light or Overlay or play along the blending modes until you are satisfied with the effect of the texture on your image. Different textures bring different effects on the image.
  • Create a Layer Mask on the texture, go to Layer in the menu then select Layer Mask>Reveal All

  • The texture created an unflattering skin to our subject, we will remove this by painting out the texture we don’t want in our image by using the layer mask we created. Select the brush tool from the Tools or press B in your keyboard. Make sure your foreground and background color is Black and White as shown in the image below.

  • Give your brush an Opacity of  50%, Size around 764 pixels or just the right size to cover the skin and Hardness of 0%.

  • With Black as foreground color and Layer Mask selected, paint over the skin of the subject and areas where you don’t want the texture to appear. It’s fine if there are textures coming in the edges of subject like on the edges of the hair just be careful not to overdo the painting because our objective is to make the texture and our image to blend seamlessly into one photograph. Done!
